🌿 Petrified Tōtara – The Quiet Strength of the Ancestors

In the forests of Aotearoa, Tōtara stands tall not with noise, but with quiet authority — a symbol of wisdom, protection, and the mature masculine. Revered in Māori tradition as a tree of carving, building, and legacy, Tōtara represents mana, leadership, and service to the collective.

When ancient Tōtara becomes stone, it carries the stillness of time — a grounded presence that holds both ancestral strength and spiritual clarity. At Crystillery, we honour Petrified Tōtara as a stone of calm courage, rooted wisdom, and enduring integrity.

When I work with men in the family violence space, I keep a log of petrified Totara in the room. When the men are struggling to find their mature masculine strength and wisdom, I ask them to hold the log. They quickly calm and begin to speak from the heart. After a while, they ask what the stone is and I explain. I often give them a small tumbled stone of petrified Totara to keep in their pocket and hold when they feel the pressures of the world pulling them to react in ways they don’t feel are right and help them come back to their own mature masculine inner wisdom.

Spiritually, Petrified Tōtara is believed to:

  • Connect you to tÅ«puna (ancestors) and the wisdom of silence
  • Support mature masculine energy — steady, protective, humble
  • Ground your actions in responsibility, honour, and balance
  • Strengthen your sense of purpose, legacy, and quiet resilience

Petrified Tōtara reminds us: true strength doesn't shout — it stands, it listens, it holds. It is the backbone of the whare, the guardian of the path forward.
